  • Visual Communication are important to communication because they are often easier to understand than written communication
  • Body Language is also known as kinesics
  • Physical Barriers can be detected & removed easily
  • PSychological Barriers develop based on the nature of individuals & their interactions with others
  • Listening is defined as the process of receiving a message from a speaker
  • Listening occurs in 3 stages: Receiving, Processing & Responding
  • Nonlistener does not hear anything
  • Marginal listener hears the sounds & words but not the meaning & intent
  • Marginal Lister are often described as superficial listeners
  • Evaluative lister is actively trying to hear what the speaker id saying but not making an effort to understand the speaker's intent
  • Active listener is the most comprehensive & powerful level of listener
  • Active listening is also referred to as responsive listening or reflective listening
  • Interaction process consists of 5 qguidelines
  • The 5 interaction guidelines are Open, Clarify, Develop, Agree & Close
  • Individuals can be categorized in 4 ways
  • Active doers like a minimal amount of discussion & a quick resolution
  • Active doers prefer bulleted information with an outline of key points
  • Methodical Plodders thrive on extensive facts & data with multiple channels of input
  • Methodical Plodders prefer to mull the sitution over extensively before making a decision
  • People person prefers a personable approach
  • People person does not want to be inundated with facts & data
  • People person is more interested in how issues or problems relate to people
  • Thinker visualizes the finished product but is not interested in details
  • Maslow's Hierarchy of needs is by Abraham Maslow
  • Lowest level of the pyramid are physiologic needs, those that are basic for surivival
  • 5 levels of needs are: Physiologic Needs, Safety Needs, Social Needs, Esteem Needs & Self Actualizing Needs
