• The assassination of Jose Calvo Sotelo in July 1936 gave General Mola the pretext to launch his military coup
• Consequences of Sotelo's Assassination:

  1. For the middle class, it showed the government was killing its own citizens
  2. Mola claimed it was part of a communist plot to overthrow the government
  3. It convinced Franco to get involved in the coup
