5.1.1 meiosis

• There are two types of cell division:

  • mitosis
  • meiosis
• mitosis - results in two genetically identical daughter cells. used in asexual reproduction
• meiosis - results in four genetically non-identical daughter cells. used in sexual reproduction
• Sexual reproduction is the fusion of male and female gametes (sex cells)
• Diploid - correct number of chromosomes
• Haploid - half the number of chromosomes
• zygote - fertilised egg cell
