Anti-Semitism - Immigration Policies (1918 - 1939)

• The 1914 British Nationality and Status Aliens Act introduced the first modern passport, they had not been required for international before this and were only made compulsory to prevent wartime espionage
• The 1919 Aliens Act meant Immigrants had to gain a work permit before arrival, had to register with the police upon arrival and maintain lawful behaviour to avoid immediate deportation
• Many Jews were seeking to escape Nazi Persecution so emigrated to Britain between 1933 and 1939, by the outbreak of the war, there were 300000 Jews in Britain
• Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists was never very popular, but it provided a catalyst for racist & anti-Semitic hatred
• In October 1936, Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists organised a march through the East End of London (home to Jewish Communities) but local residents diverted the march (the threat was minimal)
• 'The Kindertransport' (1938 - 1940) was a government scheme which accepted around 10,000 Jewish Children from Germany, Czechoslovakia and Austria
