Explanations for forgetting

Cards (5)

  • What is retroactive interference?
when new stored information disrupts the recall of old stored information for example, a teacher learning names this year that she has difficulty remembering names from last year
where two lots of information become confused/mixed up in memory
greater when the two lots of information are similar
less likely to occur when there is a gap between the instances of learning.
  • What is proactive interference?
When old stored information disrupts the recall of new stored information
  • What are the 2 explanations for forgetting?
    Interference and retrival failure
  • What is context-dependent forgetting
Recall depends on external cues e.g. weather or a place
  • What is state-dependent forgetting?
Recall depends on internal cue e.g. feeling upset
