    • the degree to which symptoms restrict movement and function, also includes the intensity of symptoms
  • Irritability:
    • the degree to which the symptoms increase and decrease in intensity
  • Stage of the disorder - Acute:
    • Time limited response to trauma or noxious events
    • May develop without trauma
    • Management involves immediate pain control, prevention of further damage/sensitisation, advice and education
  • Stage of the disorder - Sub-acute:
    • transition following traumatic injury to normal and expected tissue healing, a time when symptoms usually subside as part of natural healing
    • Management to restore functional capacity, pain control, encourage activity
  • Stage of the disorder - Recurrent:
    • new episode of previously experienced symptoms?
    • Management of symptoms as per acute stage, further investigation of contributing factors, active management
    • Onward referral?
  • Stage of the disorder - Chronic:
    • longer than 3 to 6 months
    • Ensure no serious pathology, further investigation of contributing factors, consider long term management
