    Hitler’s early life:
    hitler was born in 1889 in austria and had a normal childhood (apart from the death of his mother when he was 18, leaving him distraught). academically, he didn't do too well and, despite his love for art, was rejected from vienna art school. after leaving school hitler spent time on the streets and doping manual work. before ww, he moved to munich, but joined the german army when war was declared (he was awarded the iron cross for his bravery). hitler was incredibly angry when germany surrendered, blaming those in command.

    Creation of the nazi party:
    originally called the german workers' party, the nazi party was formed in february 1919. the german workers' party - where hitler was sent to attend a meeting by the german army - was led by anton drexler. hitler eventually joined after first attending in september 1919; he slowly built control with his persuasive oral skills and charisma (he practised speeches and gestures) - as a result, the party membership rose to 3000 by 1920. as propaganda lead for the party, hitler suggested a new name that incorporated both socialism and nationalism (the NSDP or nazi party), a new logo (the swastika), and a newspaper (the people's observer).

    drawn up by hitler and drexler in 1920, the 25 point plan outlined their vision of a perfect germany. it was based around nationalism and socialism, with antisemitism weaved within. the main points were: the destruction of the treaty of versailles & jews couldn't be german citizens.

    SA:
    after hitler become leader of the nazi party in 1921, he set up the SA to strengthen his control. they wore brown uniforms (hence the nickname 'brownshirts') and was made of many ex-soldiers who couldn't find jobs. their job was to protect nazi party meetings, intimidate opposition, & showcase the nazis' power.

    hitler took full control in january 1922 at a conference, where he persuaded members that election of leader was unnecessary. he also banned debate on party policy, which crushed any democracy.
