Anaerobic respiration

Cards (12)

  • Anaerobic respiration happens when there is not enough oxygen for aerobic respiration.
  • glucose \rightarrow lactic acid
  • anaerobic respiration happens in the cytoplasm of cells, mostly muscle cells
  • lactic acid produced in anaerobic respiration causes muscle cramp
  • anaerobic respiration transfers less energy per glucose molecule than aerobic respiration
  • when you exercise you breathe heavily. the extra oxygen you inhale breaks down the lactic acid. the oxygen needed for this is called oxygen debt.
  • fermentation is when some plants and microorganisms produce ethanol and carbon dioxide instead of lactic acid. its a type of anaerobic respiration as they respire without oxygen
  • fermentation:
glucose \rightarrow ethanol + carbon dioxide
  • C6H1206 —> CH3CHOH + CO2
  • Enzymes in yeast speed up fermentation, making the reaction faster. it works best in a warm enviroment
  • HOW DO YOU MAKE BREAD?
    • Flour, water and yeast are mixed
    • The dough rises in a warm place
    • Yeast changes the sugars (in flour) into ethanol and carbon dioxide
    • Co2 is trapped inside, making bread rise
    • Ethanol evaporates when bread is baked
  • beer - sugars in barley is fermented by yeast
wine - sugars in grapes is fermented by yeast
