  • 1st step
    clipping the slide containing the specimen onto the stage
  • 2nd step
    select the lowest powered objective lens
  • 3rd step
    use the coarse adjustment knob to move the stage up to just below the objective lens
  • 4th step
    look down the eyepiece and move the stage downwards until the specimen is just about in focus
  • 5th step
    still looking down the eyepiece, adjust the focus with the fine adjustment knob until you get a clear image of the specimen
  • if you need to see your specimen with greater magnification what should you do?
    swap to a higher powered objective lens and refocus
  • negatives of high magnification
    • if your specimen is relatively big you might not be able to see the whole thing
    • it can be difficult to focus at high magnification
