    brüning & unemployment:
in 1930, heinrich brüning was appointed chancellor. he created many unpopular policies to deal with the crisis of unemployment: cost of imported food was increased to help german agriculture but this raised food prices, government salaries were reduced & taxes increased, and unemployment benefits were reduced. these policies meant they lost support from the working class. due to the unpopularity of the laws, brüning often used article 48 to pass them., making the republic less democratic.

    Support for communism:
due to economic difficulty, there was an increase in support for the communist party (KPĐ) - their seats in the reichstag increasing from 54 to 89. their success began for two main reasons: unemployment because of the wall street crash & falling wages that made the communist message promising. Big businesses also supported hitler as he prevented communism and the businesses don’t want that or they will have lost their businesses to the state.

    Support for nazis:
hitler seemed to be the nazi party's largest asset; he even toured the country for a presidential election campaign in 1932 to persuade wealthy businesses to finance the party. since law & order had also weakened in weimar society, the SA emphasised hitler's reputation as a good leader, as they would protect nazi meetings. to broaden their appeal, they also tailored their message to different parts of german society: promised jobs to unemployed & bread for the poor, whereas business owners were promised to deal with trade unions. the nazis grew very popular - membership growing to well over 300,000 by 1932.
