    Presidential election (1932):
    president hindenburg stood for election, whilst the nazis put hitler in the ballot to stand against him. in the first round of voting, hindenburg achieved 49.6% of votes - just short of the required 50% (hitler won 30%). the election was repeated, with the nazis doubling their efforts. although hindenburg won hitler's vote share did increase by 6%.

    Von papen‘s chancellorship:
    once brüning resigned in 1932, von papen was selected. immediately, von papen struggled to control the nazis, who were a strong force in german politics. in hopes of bringing stability, he called for elections in july. however, it only caused more problems between parties. the nazis also managed to increase their seats to 230, making them the largest party in the reichstag. hitler wanted hindenburg to appoint him as chancellor but he refused. the election was repeated and the nazis' support fell. however, they were still the largest party, so von papen was told to resign by hindenburg.

    von schleicher's chancellorship:
    von schleicher replaced von papen since hindenburg didn't want hitler to become chancellor. however, his chancellorship barely lasted 2 months. von schleicher struggled as chancellor, eventually being sacked after von papen persuaded hindenburg to appoint hitler as chancellor with von papen as vice chancellor. von papen believed he could control hitler, so hindenburg agreed.
