His favourite hound was called Gelert who had been given to him bytheEnglishKingJohn.
Gelert was a loyal dog, always accompanying his master on hunts and neverleaving his side.
One day, the prince and his princess set out for a day’s hunting together, leavingtheirbaby in the safecareofGelert.
When they returned home, they were horrified to find the baby missing and Gelert's snout covered in blood.
Llywelyn immediately drew his sword and killed his favourite dog.

Llywellyn discovered his heir was lying safe, but, by the baby’s side laid a mighty wolf, which had been killed by Gelert.
Gelert had saved them both by killing an intruder who had tried to steal the baby.
The protective dog had killed the wolf to defend the baby but had then died by his master’s sword.
In memory of Gelert, Prince Llywelyn built a stone monument at the foot of Snowdon.
