  • Introduced the Green Revolution in the 1970’s due to high demand for food and constant food shortages. Aim is to increase food production and achieve self-sufficiency.
  • Introduced high yielding genetically modified crops, use of irrigation schemes, use of fertilisers and pesticides
  • High yielding varieties of rice and wheat are grown.
  • Crop production per ha has increased, food supply soon outweighed demand and in the 1990’s India became a net exporter of food for the first time
  • The Green Revolution has also brought some problems: Only states that could afford new technologies such as Punjab and Haryana have benefited
  • Grown on large estates called Plantations, monoculture practice leads to loss of soil fertility
