Sybil Birling

  • Sybil tries to hide her meeting with Eva and tells the Inspector she doesn’t recognise her. After she finally admits to refusing her any help, she says she doesn’t regret what she did and says anyone else would do the same. She says that Eva’s husband is responsible for her struggles and her death and that he should be the one to blame. At the end, she agrees with Arthur and tries to move past everything that had happened.
     
  • Sybil birling is the wife of Arthur birling, she had two children, Eric and Sheila. Through the play, she treats them as if they are too young to be responsible for their actions.
  • From the beginning of the play, Mrs Birling is seen as a cold and snobbish woman, who looks down on others who are less wealthy or of a lower class. She also sees Eric and Sheila more as children than as young adults and treats them as if they can’t make their own decisions.  By the end of the play, she hasn’t changed very much and agrees with her husband to try and cover it up and move on.
