what caused the manchurian crisis in 1931 
japan became militaristic and looked to invade land that was rich in natural resources. japan already had industry and railway there so it was an ideal location to invade.
what happened in the manchurian crisis? 
18 september 1931 - mukden incident, an explosion on the japanese railway and japan blamed china.
february 1932 - japan invaded manchuria and put a ’puppet leader’ in charge
march 1932 - china appealed to LoN, they were reluctant but issued moral condemnation which was ignored
april 1932- LoN sent lytton to investigate. this took 1 year and in that time, japan continued to invade. concluded japan were wrong but they ignored it
what were the consequence of the manchurian crisis? 
made LoN look weak because one of its members had ignored it
showed LoN were powerless without an army
showed LoN were eurocentric
what caused the abyssinian crisis? 
mussolini wanted to rebuild roman empire
mussolini knew britain and france wouldn’t risk the stresa front
abyssinia had lots of natural resources(great depression)
mussolini wanted revenge for failed 1896 invasion
mussolini knew LoN wouldn’t do anything because they didn’t in the corfu crisis
what happened in the abyssinian crisis? 
december 1934 - mussolini claimed it was italian land when he clashed at wal wal
january 1935 - laval and mussolini had secret agreement that france wouldn’t interfere
30 june 1935 - abyssinian emperor adressed LoN. LoN did nothing
october 1935 - italy entered abyssinia. LoN condemned but italy ignored.
5 may 1936 - italy troops entered the capital
may 1936 - italy left LoN
what were the consequences of the abyssinian crisis? 
britain and france showed they cared more for themselves because they couldve done something to stop mussolini
LoN wasn’t regarded as a serious or powerful organisation
hoare-laval pact was leaked which proved members were willing to undermine LoN, making it look weak.
