Analysing Chromatograms

Cards (7)

  • Chromatography
can separate soluble coloured dyes (substances) in a mixture
  • There are 2 phases in chromatography:
    • stationary phase: paper (doesn't move)
    • mobile phase: solvent (travels up the paper)
  • Substances in the mixture that have a stronger force of attraction to the mobile phase will travel higher up the paper
  • Substances in the mixture that have a stronger force of attraction to the stationary phase will not travel as high up the paper as those with a strong attraction to the mobile phase
  • Rf value
the ratio of the solutes distance travelled to the solvents distance travelled
  • Rf value = distance travelled by substance/distance traveled by solvent
  • The Rf value is always under 1
