Cards (13)

  • How to test for a carboxylic acid? [3]
Add 2cm of solution you want to test
Add a small spatula of sodium carbonate
    If effervescence the COOH
  • A beam of Infa red radiation is passed through a chemical and is absorbed by covalent bonds which increases their vibrational energy
    Different bonds absorb different frequencies
Produces a graph so able to identify functional groups
  • For an infa red graph the region between 500-1500 is called the fingerprint region which is unique to a particular compound
  • How does infa red have an impact on radiation? [3]
Some of the electromagnetic radiation eliminated ny the sun reaches earth and is absorbed. The earth re-emits some of it as IR. Molecules of greenhouse gases in atmosphere absorb the IR. Burning fossil fuels and leaving rubbish in landfill has caused rise in greenhouse gases
