Topic 14 Organic synthesis

Cards (8)

  • What is a synthetic route? [2]
Chemists use synthetic routes to show reagents, conditions and any special procedures needed to get from one compound to another
  • Why are synthetic routes good?[2]
its good for making limitations of useful natural substances when the real things are hard to extract
  • Chemists aim to have high atom economies for less waste and dont use hazardous material as it could cause accidents and environmental damage
  • waste can be reduced by having as few steps as possible in a synthesis route
  • When you draw one you need to include any special procedures like refluxing, the conditions needed like temp pressure and catalyst, any safety precautions like a fume cupboard
  • Look at notes for picture of all synthesis routes
  • look at notes for picture of synthesis routes for aromatic compounds
  • You may be asked for the reagent of a reaction like HCl or KCN
