    for most, the best way to prevent disease was to lead a sin-free life with regular prayer and confessions to remove sin and avoid punishment from god. flagellants also wiped themselves to punish themselves so that god wouldn’t punish them

    hygiene and diet advice was provided by physicians in a set of instructions called the regimen sanitatis. keeping clean through bathing was important; public baths (stewes) were available for free. diet was believed to affect the humours: eating too much was discouraged and people would regularly purge.

    people carried sweet herbs (like lavender) or posies (a bunch of flowers) to purify air. there was some action from the local government to tackle miasma; they cleaned towns to ensure no rotting animals were left lying around.
