The tripartite view/ JTB

Cards (2)

  • The tripartite view of knowledge
The definition of knowledge is justified, true belief this means if someone knows a proposition, then three conditions must be satisfied. The person must believe the proposition, it must be true and it must be justified. If all three conditions are met, then according to the JTB definition, this should be a case of knowledge.
  • Necessary and sufficient conditions

If an element is necessary, then without that element you could not have the thing in question. The definition of a necessary condition can be summed up as: x is a necessary condition of y if without x you cannot have y. If having certain necessary conditions always guarantees having the thing in question, then these elements are called sufficient. The definition of sufficient conditions can be summed up as: x and y are sufficient conditions of z if the occurrence of x and y guarantees the occurrence of z.
