  • Walter Sisulu helped to plan the Defiance Campaign from 1952, resulting in his arrest.
  • Walter Sisulu was jailed 7 times in the next 10 years following the Defiance Campaign in 1952.
  • At the Treason Trial (1956-61), Walter Sisulu was eventually sentenced to 6 years, but was released on bail pending his appeal.
  • Sisulu went underground in 1963 resulting in his wife being the first women arrested under the General Law Amendment Act (1963).
  • Sisulu was caught at Rivonia in 1963, along with 16 others. At the conclusion of the Rivonia Trial (1963-64), he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
  • With other senior ANC figures he served the majority of his sentence ion Robben Island. He was released in 1989.
