  • Hope is a theological virtue that is always directed towards God
  • Four major characteristics of hope:
    • Good
    • Future
    • Hard to Get
    • Possible to Get
  • Life is full of ups and downs
  • We must overcome all of our difficulties and obstacles
  • Matthew prefers the term "Kingdom of Heaven", while Mark prefers the term "Kingdom of God"
  • Beatitudes are a set of teachings or solemn blessings by Jesus that respond to the happiness that God has placed in the human heart
  • Happiness is the reward of the Beatitudes
  • Eight Beatitudes:
    • "Fortunate are those who are poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven"
    • "Fortunate are those who mourn, they shall be comforted"
    • "Fortunate are the gentle, they shall possess the land"
    • "Fortunate are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be satisfied"
    • "Fortunate are the merciful, for they shall find mercy"
    • "Fortunate are those with a pure heart, for they shall see God"
    • "Fortunate are those who work for peace, they shall be called children of God"
    • "Fortunate are those who are persecuted for the cause of justice, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven"
  • Anawim are those who are poor in spirit and the poor of the Lord, they are people who cannot boast of anything good they possess
  • Mourning is due to sadness
  • The humbler are gentle in their own ways, out of humility the gentle surrender themselves totally to God and work wholeheartedly to transform the land so that God may ultimately reign
  • Food and drink are the most basic of all necessities in life, justice refers to righteousness and concerns fidelity to the covenant of God
  • Compassion is to put oneself in someone else's situation, mercy is about forgiveness
  • Pure of heart refers to those who are single-hearted and whose lives are exclusively directed to God, they only desire to make God happy
  • Eirene is the Greek word for peace, Shalom is the Hebrew word for peace, the "Prince of Peace" is the Messiah
  • Three types of opposition:
    • Insult
    • Persecution
    • Evil talk or calumny
  • Sins against hope:
    • Presumption: excessive hope
    • Despair: defective or lack of hope
