  • Court: entertain and advise the monarch
  • Privy Council: made up of 19 members, William Cecil was Secretary of State, debate issues, advise monarch, oversee government, security, law
  • Parliament: made up of the House of Lords and Commons, pass laws, grant extra taxes, called and dismissed by the monarch (13 times during her reign)
  • Lord Lieutenant: each county had one, chosen by the monarch, part of local government
  • Justice of the Peace: unpaid but gave them important status, enforced law and order, selected by local gentry (landlords of the countryside)
  • France: during Mary’s reign she lost Calais, so France now controlled the entire Northern coastline and left England vulnerable to attacks
  • Spain: King Philip II was a strong Catholic and disliked Elizabeth reintroducing Protestantism into England
