• It is a process where a body expands in either area, volume, or shape when heated
• Thermal expansion occurs in solids, liquids and gasses
• when a solid is heated, it expands in size and shape = increase in length, area and volume
• Molecules begin to vibrate in solids, resulting in taking up more space making the solid matter expanding
• Liquids expand when heated
• liquids expand more than solids when exposed to the same temperature
• Gasses expand the most when heated - gas particles are far apart & weakly attracted to eachother
• Heat causes atoms of the gas to vibrate and take up more space
