Earthquake

Subdecks (2)

Cards (49)

  • Earthquake - A sudden shaking and trembling caused by a sudden release of energy from inside the earth
  • Focus is where the earthquake begins. The point directly above the focus is the Epicenter, where the greatest damage take place
  • Seismology - study of an earthquake
  • seismologoist - a person who studies earthquakes
  • PHIVOLCS (philippine institute of volcanology and seismology) - is the national agency that monitors and records volcanic activity
  • Normal fault (divergent) - Earths crust are pulled apart, gravity causes one section to move downward in relation to other
  • Reverse fault (convergent) - Earths crust are squeezed together, force pushed one section upward in relation to the other
  • Strike-slip fault (transform) - rock layers on opposite side of a fault slides past each other horizontally
  • Friction - resistance to motion of one object moving relative to another
  • Stick and slip - everytime a fault slips or moves, the earth quakes
  • Richter scale - measure of an earthquake's intensity based on its magnitude
  • Seismograph - measures ground vibrations caused by earthquakes
  • Magnitude - how big an earthquake is measured by the amount of energy released during the event
  • Seismic waves - energy released by an earthquake that travels through the ground as vibrations
  • Epicenter - point directly above where the earthquake started
