  • Functionalism: Each aspect of society depending on each other and contributing to the stability of society e.g: as a society we rely on ambulance workers; therefore, them going on strike allows us to acknowledge them
  • School of thought which each of the institutions relationships, roles and norms that together constitute a society serves a purpose, and each is indispensable for the continued existence of the others and of society as a whole
    • How we collectively create a sense of belonging
    • How we collectively reduce conflict
    • We are strongly shaped by society (without free will)
  • Criticisms of functionalism
    Shaped by society- lack of freedom to make own decision- Puppets on a string (aren't individuals)
    Too positive- ignores negative sides of institutions (family and abuse)
    Emphasizes on 'stability made difficult to theorise social change
    Often overlooks gender, class and ethnicity
