2.1.3 Stresemann, Stability and Extremism, 1924-29

Cards (3)

  • Stresemann's policy of "Fulfilment", introduction of the Dawes Plan and signing of the Locarno Treaties helped reduce international tensions with Germany's wartime enemies and improved the economy, which subsequently reduced extremism
  • In the 1928 Reichstag elections, the Nazis and the KPD received less than 15% of the vote between them, indicating that extremism was in retreat. However, the three main parties that supported democracy only won 49.9% of the vote
  • Increasing support for the Nazis indicates that growing numbers of Germans wanted more decisive action to deal with the Treaty of Versailles rather than Stresemann's pragmatic approach
