practical investigation

Cards (7)

  • What was the aim for theories practical?
To investigate differences in pro social behaviour between genders and if the results link to gender stereotypes
  • Sample
opportunity sample of 50 people- 26 men and 24 women
  • learning practical procedure:
naturalistic non participant observation ( so could not gain informed consent)- Observed how many individuals held the door open for another person and if that person was male or female, filled information into a tally chart
  • Findings from learning practical investigation :
20 men held the door open compared to only 10 women opening it.
  • strength of learning theories practical-
Was a naturalistic observation so results were most valid as no social desirability would have bee present as they were unaware of being observed
  • weakness of learning theories practical-
Provides figures into what males and females did but not why- other factors could have influenced a person to open or not open the door such as if they had their hands full- limitations with quantitative data
  • What is a improvement that could have been made?
To study various locations as our study only looked at a small town in south England with potentially a older age demographic. By observing several different areas at different times ofd day then data can be gathered of various pro social behaviours which allows findings to represent a wider population of people
