  • By the early 1970's many figures of the ANC were in prison and others were in prison and others were under house arrests, detention or banning orders. Winnie Mandela and 21 others were arrested in 1970.
  • The South African government appeared to have successfully dealt with the ANC and PAC.
  • Mozambique and Angola were granted independence by Portugal. They had common borders with South Africa and Namibia. They offered safe havens for ANC members.
  • The Soweto Uprising and the response of the South African Government encouraged activists to join the ANC.
  • The collapse of the Black Consciousness Movement left the ANC as the main anti-Apartheid movement.
  • In 1972, the ANC began a propaganda campaign to win support internationally. Oliver Tambo played an important role.
  • In 1974, the UN General Assembly suspended South Africa. The ANC and PAC were granted observer status by the UN.
  • In 1975, Oliver Tambo addressed the OAU Council of Ministers in Tanzania.
  • In 1976, MK began training guerrillas in Swaziland before sending them back to South Africa. Terrorist attacks took place in 1976.
  • In 1978, the ANC began a full scale guerrilla campaign in rural and urban areas against the South African Security forces.
