When naming an alkene, use the prefix “cis” if both substituents lie on the same side of the double bond when viewed down the long axis of the molecule (the cis-1,2-dimethylcyclohexene). Use the prefix “trans” if they lie on opposite sides of the double bond (the trans-1,2-dimethylcyclohexene)
