Ionic bonding and structure

Cards (5)

  • How do you do the formula of ionic compounds?
    You drop and swap
  • What is an ionic structure described as?
    Giant lattice
  • What are ions?
Particles that have a different number of protons and electrons.
    They are electrically charged
  • How are ions formed?
    When a metal reacts with a non-metal:
metal atoms- lose electrons to form positive ions
non-metals- gain electrons to form negative ions
  • Why do ionic compounds have a high melting and boiling point?
It is because it is held together by strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions
