Delegated legislation

• Delegated legislation – laws that are made by a person/body that isn’t parliament 
• Parent (or enabling) Act – an act created by parliament to a specific person/body that sets out which further laws can be created 
• Reasons for use of delegated legislation 

  • Lack of parliamentary time (especially in emergencies)
  • Lack of technical expertise/knowledge 
  • Allows for further consultation before detailed acts are drafted
  • Can be easily amended or revoked when needed
