  • The law commission 
    ◦       A permanent body set up to advise the government in simplifying the law to be more cost effective and easier to understand.
  • Made up of legal professionals with law experience and formed in 1965 to replace many small councils. 
  • Topics can be referred by government or the law commission may identify areas themselves.
  • 1.     The commission do research on the topic and publish a consultation paper 
    2.     The consultation paper suggests options for reform and seeks suggestions from experts
    3.     The proposal is published often alongside a draft bill for parliament.

    Consolidation – draw existing provisions of an act together 
  • Aims of the law commission
    Codification – brings together statutory and precedent law on a topic 
  • e.g. The Fraud Act was simplified, currently working on a review of the Arbitration Act 1996
