Parliamentary Tradition

• O' Connell was born in Kerry, 1775
• While studying in France, he witnessed the French revolution which gave him a hatred for violence
• married his 3rd cousin
• founded the catholic association to achieve catholic emancipation from penal laws
• penny per month to fund the association
• When elected MP for Clare he forced the British Government to pass the Catholic Relief act
• Catholic relief act- Catholics can take seats in parliament
• Became knows as the liberator
• Passed slavery abolition act which abolished slavery in the British Empire
• Fredrick Douglass was a slave and he saw O' Connell as a hero
• Set up repeal association to repeal the Act of Union and establish Parliament in Dublin
• Monster meetings held all over the country, thousands attended. This failed and O' Connell was imprisoned for three months
• Warned British government about severity of the famine before he died in 1847 in Italy
• O' Connell is buried in Dublin
• Parliamentary tradition is using peaceful and lawful ways to pass laws in parliament
• Irelands parliment was abolished in the act of union 1800
• 1798 rebellion also gave him a hatred for violence
