Limiting water loss (insects)

• Small surface area to volume ratio: minimises the area over which water can be lost
• Waterproof coverings: insects have a rigid skeleton made of chitin that is over with a waterproof cuticle
• Spiracles: can be closed to reduce water loss, however this conflicts with gas exchange, so they are mainly closed when the insect is at rest
