How did Henry VII consolidate his power

Cards (4)

  • He dated his reign to the 21st of August 1485, one day before the Battle of Bosworth , to show that he was the ’rightful’ king before the battle, criminalising those who fought against him. This allowed him to imprison many Yorkists who had a better claim to the throne such as the Earl of Warwick
  • He organised his coronation to take place on the 7th of November, a week before his first parliamentary hearings, to illustrate to the people that he had a right to the throne based on hereditary rught rather than a parliamentary sanction.
  • He controlled nobility, such as the acts of attainders
  • He married Elizabeth of York, daughter of King Edward IV, she was a Yorkist and Henry was Lancastrian, so marrying her would unite the two houses and end the blood thirsty feuds. It would also make sure that she couldn’t challenge him to the throne, as she had a stronger claim. He also made sure he married her after his coronation, so people could not say that he simply gained the throne from his wife. This marriage resulted in the birth of Prince Arthur, cementing the dynasty.
