    Hitler launched the Munich Putsch sometimes also referred to as the Beer Hall Putsch, armed revolt intended to overthrow Weimar government.

    1918-23, anger at Weimar, ToV, loss of land, reparations grew, alleged stab in the back by the November Criminals. Hitler, influenced by Italian fascists, Mussolini, 1922- Mussolini led parliamentary forces, ’March on Rome’, forced new leader. 1923, invasion of Ruhr, industry/workers effected. Bitter at hyperinflation, bread cost, 200,000 billion marks 1923. 1919-23- NSDAP growing Munich base in Bavaria, leaders eg von Kahr not fan of Weimar, ignored SA violence, NSDAP 50,000 members 1923
  • Events within Munich Putsch
    (8th November)
    1-Evening 8th Nov, Bavarian officials meeting in a beer hall, Munich, including von Kahr (lead Bav gov), von Seisser (head Bav police), von Lossow (head German army in Bav). 2- Hitler burst into meeting with 600 SA members, shot ceiling, declared intentions to take over Bavaria, overthrow Weimar, install Ludendorff leader of Germany. 3- Hitler demanded von Kahr, Seisser, Lossow support him, Rohm took over local police and army headquarters. 4-Army barracks remain in hands of the gov. Hitle was elsewher, Ludendorff released vob Kahr, Lossow and Seisser

    (November 9th-11th)
    12am 9th Nov, Hitler decided to continue putsch with 1000 SA and 2000 volunteers. Hitler, Goering, Rohm, Ludendorff and Streicher marched on town centre to declare Hitler president. 5am on the 9th Nov, Hitler gathered his supporters, prepared to launch their attack on the streets Bavaria. Ludendorff, Streicher and Rohm were arrested, Goering fled abroad and Hitler was arrested at a friends house hiding in a wardrobe on the 11th Nov.
  • Consequences of Munich Putsch
    Townspeople indifferent to Hitlers rebellion, with only 2000 rifles Hitler and the Nazis were outgunned, someone opened fire: Hitlers left arm was dislocated, 14 Nazis and 4 police officers were shot dead. Hitler needed to, build a party with nationwide support, used democracy to win power. Ludendorff found not guilty, Hitler and three others were found guilty for treason, five years in Landsberg prison. NSDAP was banned. Hitler released after 9 months. Hitler wrote Mein Kampf in prison, also used trial to get national publicity
