  • "Holy Spirit" is the proper name of the one whom we adore and glorify with the Father and the Son
  • The Church has received the name "Holy Spirit" from the Lord and professes it in the Baptism of her new children
  • The term "spirit" translates from the Hebrew word ruah, which means breath, wind and air
  • The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity
  • Christ often spoke of the Holy Spirit (Mat 28:19)
  • On certain occasions, the Holy Spirit appeared in vol form:
    • When Christ was baptized by John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit appeared in the form of a dove
    • On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended with a mighty rushing wind and rested over the Apostles in the form of tongues of fire (Acts 2:1-4)
  • Dove symbolizes gentleness that works in our souls
  • Rush of wind represents the strengthening of the will
  • Fire represents zeal, fervor, and illumination of the mind
  • After Baptism, we have the Holy Spirit in our hearts as long as we have no mortal sin on our souls, known as the gift of "Sanctifying Grace"
  • On Pentecost, ten days after the Ascension, the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles and disciples
  • The Holy Spirit will dwell in the Church until the end of time
  • Sanctifying grace is an habitual gift that perfects the soul to live with God and act by His love
  • There are two kinds of grace: Sanctifying grace and actual grace
  • The chief effects of Sanctifying grace are:
    • Makes us holy and pleasing to God
    • Makes us adopted children of God

  • Actual grace is the supernatural assistance of God for salutary acts granted in consideration of the merits of Christ
  • Actual grace is obtained by good works and through means offered by the Church, such as attending Mass, receiving sacraments, and reading good books
  • The Theological Virtues are faith, hope, and charity
  • Supernatural virtues include the three theological virtues and the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit
  • All other moral virtues spring from the cardinal virtues
