  • Formula for density?
    Density = mass / volume
  • Density is a measure of how much mass a substance has, per unit of its volume.
  • What are the units of density?
    Kg / m^3
  • Symbol formula for density?
    p = m / v
  • How to calculate the density of a solid..
    1 ~ Measure mass of solid using a balance.
    2 ~ If the shape is regular, measure volume geometrically.
    3 ~ If shape irregular - measure volume by adding it to a Eureka can filled with water.
    This will cause a volume of water equal to the volume of the solid to flow into measuring cylinder.
    4 ~ Use formula to calculate density.
  • To convert g / cm^3 to kg / m^3 you
    have to..
    Multiply g / cm^3 value by 1000.
  • To calculate density of a liquid experimentally..
    1 ~ Place empty measure cylinder onto a balance, then ‘zero’ the reading.
    2 ~ Add some of the liquid to the measuring cylinder.
    3 ~ Read volume of liquid from measuring cylinder.
    4 ~ Read mass from balance.
    5 ~ Use density equation to calculate density.
  • Methods to reduce the uncertainty in experimental measurements of density..
    ~ While measuring density of liquids, use larger volume of liquid.
    ~ Take multiple measurements and calculate the mean.
