• disease prevention and control is both a personal and social responsibility
• 2 factors that influnce disease transmission: 1. Environmental Factor 2. socio-economic factor
• Environmental Factor includes water supply, climate, pollution
• socio-econmic factor includes cultural practices, and poverty
• three levels of preventing disease: primary prevention, secondary prevention, tertiary prevention
• primary level - activities are done to prevent one from having the disease
• primary prevention includes getting immunized, eating a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep
• secondary prevention - activities are done to prevent further damages when the disease has already started
• secondary prevention includes prompt diagnosis and treatment
• tertiary prevention - the focus is on rehabilitating the sick so as prevent long-term complications of the disease
• Stages of Infection: 1. incubation period 2. prodomal stage 3. illness stage 4. convalescence stage
• pathogens are the microorganism that can cause disease
• 6 pathogens: backteria, rickettsia, viruses, fungi, protozoa, parasite worms
• bacteria are the one called microorganisms
• saprophytes- digest non living food
• parasites - feeds on living plants
• toxin bacteria are the bad bacteria, resident bacteria are the good bacteria
• rickettsia - most of them groow in the intestinal tracts of insects, which can carry them to their human hosts
• blood sucking insects such as lice, mites and ticks carry rickettsia
• viruses - are small, simple life-like forms from one to 100 the size of a bacteria
• virus is the human worst enemy
• fungi - are simple organisms that cannot make their own food
• protozoa - small single organisms
• parasite worms - classified as parasites
• you can get urinary track infection and tubercolosis from bacteria
• you can get common cold and chicken fox from virus
• you can get athlete's foot and jock itch from fungi
• you can get diarrhea from protozoa
