whale hunting

• in alaska, they hunt bowhead whales
• all of the whale is used by the community
• the indigenous population were allowed to continue hunting but only three per year
• the whale is used for food, clothing etc
• the left over carcass is left for the polar bears to eat on the beach
• the inupiat store the whale meat in an ice cellar under their homes in the permafrost layer
• subsistence whaling means its used to eat and survive, not to sell
