  • War story opening - description
As the rain poured down over the trenches , I could hear the sounds of hapless soldiers awakening to the sight of another solemn day. Ominous clouds covered the sky , prohibiting any form of warmth of light from reaching those in need, while the glimmering sun rose over the valley just out of sight. It was small , but it was a snippet of hope , and those never came often. The all consuming loneliness was something that we all felt and was something I would never wish on anyone.
  • War story - paragraph 1
Distant gunfire broke our peace as we were reminded there was no time to lose. We had to keep working. The sound , however , was oddly comforting. A small reminder that there were others out there just as scared as I was. A reminder that I wasn't fully alone.
Birds soared in the sky , screeching and howling; my fellow soldiers cried out for lost friends , and even enemy gunfire was a hopeful sound to hear. Being left alone with your thoughts in the silence of waiting was truly our worst enemy , even more so than the gun waiting to take our lives. But there was nothing left to do about it , except to block it out.
  • War story - paragraph 2
A group of us assembled along a disintegrating wall, longing for each other's company. We never really talked much. I didn't know a lot about anyone. Talks of home reminded us of what we'd lost, and talks of the future seemed futile for most of us. so we waited, offered the occasional comforting smile , and took each day as it came. Men from all different walks of life, brought together to inevitably die in the same way.
