Line is an element of art used to define shape, contours, and outlines, and to suggest mass and volume
Line may come in two characteristics: form (curved, dotted, or broken lines) and direction (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal lines)
Different characteristics of lines convey different meanings:
Horizontal Line creates serenity and perfect stability
Vertical Line creates strength and perfect stability
Diagonal Line creates action
Curved Line creates gradual change of direction
Circular Line creates abrupt change of direction
Types of lines:
Outlines are made by the edge of an object or its silhouette
Contour Lines describe the shape of an object and the interior detail
Expressive Lines catch the movement and gestures of an active figure
Sketch Lines capture the appearance of an object or impression of a place
Calligraphic Lines are elegant handwriting or lettering done by hand
Implied Lines are created by a group of objects seen from a distance
Shape is an area enclosed by a line or lines, two-dimensional figures with height and width
Different kinds of shapes:
Geometric Shapes: circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, and other geometric shapes
Organic Shapes: shapes found in nature, free flowing, informal, and irregular
Positive Shapes: solid forms in a design
Negative Shapes: space around the positive shape
Static Shapes: shapes that appear stable and resting
Dynamic Shapes: shapes that appear moving and active
Colors are reflections of light on surfaces, classified into primary, secondary, tertiary, analogous, complementary, monochromatic, warm, and cool colors
Primary colors: red, blue, and yellow
Secondary colors: purple, green, and orange
Tertiary colors: amber, vermilion, magenta, violet, teal, and chartreuse
Analogous Colors: colors that lie next to each other on the color wheel
Complementary Colors: colors opposite to each other on the color wheel
Monochromatic Colors: several values of one color
Warm Colors: colors that give a feeling of warmth
Cool Colors: colors that give a feeling of coolness
Space refers to distances or areas around, between, or within components of a piece, positive space is enclosed in a shape, negative space is the opposite part enclosed by the shape
Perspective helps perceive distance in painting, one-point perspective has objects meeting at one point on the horizontal line, two-point perspective has objects meeting at two points on the horizontal line
appeals to our sense of feel, real texture is the actual texture of an object, implied texture makes art look like a certain texture
Value pertains to the lightness or darkness of a color, tint is the lightness of a color, shade is the darkness of a color
Form is the three-dimensionality of an object with dimensions of height, width, and length
Principles of Art:
Rhythm: repetition of elements to produce a pattern
Movement: illusion of motion in a painting, sculpture, or design
Balance: visual weight in a picture, can be symmetrical or asymmetrical
Proportion: relationships of the size of objects in a body of work
Contrast: shows differences between elements of art in an artwork
Variety: diversity of elements used in an artwork
Emphasis: greater impact or highlight given to a certain element
Harmony: unity of an artwork, arrangement of related elements viewed as a whole
