  • Scene 1
    • Mercutio and Benvolio banter before Tybalt enters looking for Romeo
    • Romeo refuses to fight him so Mercutio challenges him instead
    • Mercutio is killed by Tybalt, Romeo kills him in retaliation and is then banished to Mantua
  • Scene 2
    • Juliet waits for Romeo
    • The Nurse informs her of his banishment and Tybalt's death
    • Juliet is conflicted about who to be more upset for
  • Scene 3
    • Friar Lawrence tries to console Romeo
    • He tells him to spend the night with Juliet and leave in the morning
  • Scene 4
    Capulet arranges for Juliet to marry Paris
  • Scene 5
    • Romeo leaves Juliet at dawn
    • Lady Capulet informs Juliet of her arranged marriage which she refuses
    • Capulet is outraged and threatens to disown her

    Scene 1
    Romeo uses harsh alliteration to show his anger at Tybalt before killing him
  • “One word ‘banished’ hath slain ten thousand Tybalts”

    Scene 2
    Juliet is saying that Romeo's banishment is worse than her cousin's death
  • “Banishment? Be merciful, say death.”

    Scene 3
    Romeo is saying that being separated is worse than death
  • “It was the nightingale, not the lark”
    Scene 5
    Juliet uses light and dark imagery to show their separation from society and encourage Romeo not to leave
