  • The product of art is called a work of art and includes drawing, painting, sculpting, photography, performance art, dance, music, poetry, prose, and theatre
  • Classification of Functions of Arts:
    • Motivated (Functional) Examples: Architecture, weaving, furniture-making
    • Non-motivated (Non-functional) Examples: Painting, sculpture, literature, music, and theatre arts
  • There are five common functions of Art:
    • Personal Function: Arts are vehicles for the artists' expression of their feelings and ideas. They also serve as a means of expression for us and can have therapeutic value. Works of art make us aware of other ways of thinking, feeling, and imagining. Art may also serve the personal function of controlling its viewers and can perform religious service or acknowledgment.
    • Spiritual Functions: Designs of religious structures and hymns used in worship services express spiritual beliefs about the destiny of life controlled by a higher power. Portraits of Saints and religious personalities also express spiritual beliefs.
    • Social Function: Art is closely related to every aspect of social life and influences social behavior. It seeks to influence the collective behavior of a people and addresses aspects of collective life. Viewers can relate to social art and are influenced by it to enhance the shared sense of identity of those in family, community, or civilization.
