  • Visual Elements of Arts and Designs
  • Importance of visual elements of arts and design:
    • Enables us to describe what an artist has done
    • Analyze what is going on in a particular piece
    • Communicate thoughts and findings using a common language
    • No Elements of Art... No Art Work!
  • Design elements are the basic units of any visual design which form its structure and convey visual messages
  • Painter and design theorist Maitland E. Graves defined the elements of design as line, direction, shape, size, texture, value, and color
  • Elements of art and design
  • Color:
    • Result of light reflecting back from an object to our eyes
    • Color theory and the color wheel are often referred to when studying color combinations in visual design
    • Color allows viewers to have different interpretations of visual designs
    • Color strategies are used for organization and consistency in a design product
  • Line:
    • Defined by a point moving in space
    • Can be vertical, horizontal, diagonal, or curved
    • Different lines create different moods
    • Example: stars in a constellation connected via imaginary lines are a natural example of using lines in a composition
  • Point:
    • Beginning of “something” in “nothing”
    • Provokes human imagination to link abstract points with familiar shapes or forms
  • Shape:
    • Two-dimensional area that stands out from the space next to or around it
    • Types of shapes: geometric shapes, organic shapes, curvilinear shapes, rectilinear shapes
    • Artists can choose to create a composition that revolves mainly around one style of shape or combine both
  • Texture:
    • Refers to the physical and visual qualities of a surface
    • Types of textures: tactile texture, visual texture, pattern
    • Texture can be used to attract or repel interest to an element in a design
  • Pattern:
    • Motifs repeated over and over again in a surface result in a pattern
    • Patterns are frequently used in fashion design, textile design, and architectural design
  • Space:
    • Concerned with the area deep within the moment of designated design
    • In two-dimensional design, space concerns creating the illusion of a third dimension on a flat surface
    • Techniques like overlap and shading are used to create depth and dimension in a design
  • Visual Elements of Arts and Designs:
    • Shading adds gradation marks to make a two-dimensional surface appear three-dimensional
    • Highlight, Transitional Light, Core of the Shadow, Reflected Light, and Cast Shadow give an object a three-dimensional look
  • Linear Perspective:
    • Relates to how an object appears smaller the farther away it gets
  • Activity 4: What I Know Chart, Part 2:
    • Students need to go back to Activity 1 and answer the "What I Learned" column based on their learning from the lesson
  • Activity 5: Check for Understanding:
    • Students need to read each question carefully and write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is incorrect
  • Activity 6: Thinking about Learning:
    • Progress Tracker: Students mark their work tracker to see accomplished work and remaining tasks
    • My Learning Tracker: Students record the date, module number, learning targets, activities done, scores in activities, factors contributing to performance, and plans for improvement
    • Students need to answer questions about the lesson difficulty, meeting learning objectives, challenges faced, and how they overcame those challenges
  • FAQs:
    • Question 1: Building blocks of art composition are the Visual Elements of line, shape, tone, color, pattern, texture, and form
    • Question 2: Careers in art and design include Art Directors, Craft and Fine Artists, Fashion Designers, Graphic Designers, etc.
  • The Visual Elements of Art are Line, Shape, Color, Texture, Space, Form, and Value
  • Knowing the elements of art enables us to describe what an artist has done, analyze a piece, and communicate thoughts using a common language
  • No Elements of Art means No Art Work
  • Color is the result of light reflecting back from an object to our eyes

  • Line is defined by a point moving in space and can be vertical, horizontal, diagonal, or curved
  • Different lines create different moods in art
  • A Point is the beginning of "something" in "nothing" and can provoke human imagination
  • Shape is a two-dimensional area that stands out from the space next to or around it
  • Shapes can be geometric, organic, curvilinear, or rectilinear
  • Texture refers to the physical and visual qualities of a surface
  • Texture can be tactile, visual, or created through collage or assemblage
  • Pattern results from repeating motifs in a surface
  • Patterns are used in fashion design, textile design, and architectural design
  • Space in design concerns creating the illusion of a third dimension on a flat surface
  • Overlap and shading are used to create depth in a two-dimensional design
