• oil still clogs beaches, dozens of marine species have been decimated and coastal communities are struggling with social ills ranging from increased domestic violence to alcoholism
• five to 6 years after the spill, people became very depressed and isolated
• there was increased divorces, increased domestic violence and increased bankruptcies
• grassroots organisation in 1992 was set up to help operate a shelter for battered women
