Endocrine System

Cards (69)

  • Endocrine system - is responsible for the changes that you see or feel in your body. regulates, coordinates, and controls growth and development
  • Endocrine glands - organs of edocrine system that produce and secretes (releases) hormones. Its effects takes longer time to process unlike nervous system.
  • Hormones - Chemical messengers that are secreted from glands into blood stream and affect cells in other parts of the body.
  • Target cells - hormonrd that work on certain cells
  • Receptor - part of target cells that "recognize" the hormones and allow them to influence that cells
  • External Stimuli - by way of nerves from sensory organs in the nervous system
  • Internal stimuli - by way of nerves and other hormones from inside the body
  • nerve cells travel throught neurons
  • hormones travel through blood stream
  • Pituary - also called as master's gland and located at the base of the brain
  • pituary - regulates all other endocrine glands and releases growth hormones
  • thyroid - gland that is located below the voice box/trachea that regulates metabolism, body heat, and bone growth
  • thyroid - cause storage of calcium in bones
  • Parathyroid -gland that is located in the neck/back of thyroid, regulates use of calcium and phosphorus
  • parathyroid - controls calcium level and normalizes bone growth
  • hypothalamus - located above pituary/brain and links nervous system to endocrine system,
  • adrenal - located on top of kidneys, regulates response through emergency and stressful situations
  • adrenal - regulates metabolism, blood pressure, and salt balance, and prepares body for action
  • pancreas - located between kidneys/below of stomach and regulates blood sugar levels
  • ovaries - located at lower abdomen, regulates production of eggs, influence female traits
  • testes - located at lower abdomen, regulates production of sperms and controls maturation and male characteristics
  • thymus - located infront of the heart, regulates parts of the immune system, produces body's antibodies
  • pineal gland - modulates sleep patterns and produces melatonin
  • placenta - for keeping the baby safe in times of pregnancy
  • Hypothalamus - antidiuretic hormone
  • hypothalamus - oxytocin
  • what is the target organ of antidiuretic hormone?
    kidney
  • what is the target organ of oxytocin?
    uterus
  • What hormone regulates water reabsorption of the cells?
    antidiuretic hormone
  • what hormone is for the contraction of uterus in giving birth?
    oxytocin
  • Pituary - growth hormone
  • pituary - thyroid stimulating hormone
  • pituary - adrenocorticotropic hormone
  • pituary - follicle stimulating hormone
  • pituary - luteinizing hormone
  • what is the target organ of growth hormone?
    all cells
  • what is the target organ of thyroid stimulating hormone?
    thyroid gland
  • what is the target organ of adrenocorticotropic hormone?
    adrenal cortex
  • what is the target organ of follicle-stimulating hormone?
    testes or ovaries
  • what is the target organ of luteinizing hormone?
    testes or ovaries
