Performance analysis

Cards (23)

  • Performance analysis runs to capture, analyse and evaluate key components relating to performance and provide concise feedback to inform future practice
  • What is technical analysis?
Analyses efficiency of movements and aesthetics
  • What is tactical analysis?
Analyses vision, decision making and strategies
  • What is behavioural analysis?
Observes and assesses social interactions and why performers behave in a certain way
  • What is physical analysis?
Collection of data to inform training and competition
  • Behavioural analysis observes and assesses social interactions and why performers behave in a certain way
  • Technical analysis analyses efficiency of movement and aesthetics
  • Physical analysis is a collection of data to inform training and competition
  • tactical analysis analyses vision, decision making and strategies
  • What are the purposes of performance analysis?
    • asses performance and potential
    • design training programmes
    • set goals and judge an athletes progress
    • talent identification
    • monitoring current fitness level
    • identification of strengths and weaknesses
    • assess health status and monitor recovery after injury
    • identify opposition strengths and weaknesses
    • predict opposition tactics
  • The focus of analysis depends very much on sporting activity of and the level of performer
  • What is biomechanical analysis?
    Analyses technical execution of skills
  • Biomechanical analysis: Movement analysis, planes, axes, angles, distances, times, forces
  • What is notational analysis?
Using symbols and data to record information
  • Notational analysis: Statistics, patterns of play, errors and achievements
Software companies have developed computerized products such as Opta to help
  • What is fitness and skills analysis?
Used outside of competition to gain information on performance
  • Fitness and skills analysis: Physical conditioning, technical efficiency, tactical effectiveness
  • What is behavioural analysis? (methods of analysing)
Using observation of self-report questionnaires, coaches can collect information from performers on issues and feelings about performance
  • Behavioural analysis: Arousal, anxiety and decision making
  • What is video analysis?
Provides objective information and can enhance performance analysis
  • Video analysis: Permanent, immediate, technological aids (freezing, slow motion).
Can be used in conjunction with software such as Dartfish
  • Performance analysis technology
    • Fitness trackers e.g- Fitbit- Participation/performance level training analysis. Basic data collection such as heart rate, training zones
    • GPS (Global Positioning System) e.g- Garmin- provides location, distance and elevation data in addition to basic measures. Used by range of athletes (team sports, runners, cyclists) Provides instant feedback to performer and coach
    • Social media platforms e.g- Strava- used to share times/training experiences (used by runners, cyclists)
  • Limitations of performance analysis
    • Real time analysis- difficult to remember key events whilst observing. Research suggests coaches can only recall 30-50% of the ket performance factor they had witnessed within a game
    • Coaches may form biased views of their athletes, which in tun may mean that incorrect guidance is given on how to improve performance
    • Aspects such as flair, vision, decision making and spatial awareness are difficult to quantify using performance analysis
