Ionic Equations and Hazards

    Cards (12)

    • In an ionic equation
      only the reacting particles
      (and the products they form)
      are included
    • How to write an ionic equation
      • anything that's ionic and aqueous will break into ions in solution
      • so write out with AQ ions separately
      • cross out anything the same on BOTH sides
      • so overall charge is the same
    • Hazard
Anything that has the potential to cause harm or damage
    • Risk
Probability of someone or something being harmed if exposed to a hzard
    • Oxidising
      • provides oxygen which allows other materials to burn more fiercely
      • eg. liquid oxygen
LOOKS LIKE: a circle on fire
    • Toxic
      • can acuse death by eg. swallowing, breathing in, absorption
      • eg hydrogen cyanide
LOOKS LIKE: skull and cross bones
    • Highly Flammable
      • catches fire easily
      • eg. petrol
      LOOKS LIKE: line on fire
    • Environmental Hazard
      • harmful to organisms snd environment
      • eg. mercury
LOOKS LIKE: tree and dead fish
    • Harmful
      • can cause irritation, reddening or blistering of the skin
      • eg. bleach
      LOOKS LIKE: !
    • Corrosive
      • destroys materials, including living tissue (eg. eyes, skin)
      • eg. concentrated sulfuric acid
LOOKS LIKE: two test tubes burning throw a hand and rectangle
    • Risks:
      • associated with chemicals
      • associated with equipment
    • When planning an experiment, you need to...
      • identify all the hazards and the risks from hazards, including
      • working out how likely it is that something will go wrong
      • how serious it would be if it did
      • produce risk assessment
      • suggestions to reduce risk
      • eg. wear protection, use low concentrations
